Today, Thursday 4th June, local residents in Walkden and across the country will go to the polls for the European elections.

Local people have a real chance in these elections to show that they want change. We have a Labour Council, a Labour Government, and Labour MEPs who have all let Walkden down.

By voting Conservative today you can:

Send a clear message to Gordon Brown that he needs to change his mind and give us the referendum on the EU Constitution that he promised and then failed to deliver.

Vote for change - if you’re sick of Gordon Brown’s hopeless Government and Labour’s debt crisis, this is your chance to show it.

Support the Conservative vision for change - our plans to improve the NHS, for better school discipline, and to free our police from bureaucracy so they can get out and fight crime.

Tell Gordon Brown we want a General Election - now!

We have a strong team of Conservative MEPs and candidates who have shown a strong interest in standing up for the interests of local people. Indeed only a week or two ago Cllr Alex Williams joined our team in Walkden to knock on doors and listen to the concerns of local residents. Unlike Labour and the Liberal Democrats who vote against the British interest, and unlike UKIP whose Brussels grouping has descended into a disorganised rabble, our Conservative team will always stand up for the North West and for Salford.

It’s time for change - vote Conservative today!

Residents have reported back that these have had a noticeable effect in both slowing the traffic down and reducing the impact on local properties of heavy vehicles travelling over the Old Clough Lane railway bridge.

Similar cameras have also been installed on Memorial Road and Manchester Road at the request of the local community - your Walkden South Councillors hope that they will prove to be equally beneficial.

Due to the Labour’s failure to plan ahead, at present the site is a derelict eyesore.

Local Councillor Nicky Turner is leading the campaign. She said:

“It is a real shame that rather than plan properly for the future, the Labour Council have left the building to rot and built up a huge maintenance backlog, which is why they seem determined to sell the land for development.

There is a real shortage of youth provision in Walkden and the nearby area, and this is a huge opportunity to provide a new opportunity for our young people which we cannot afford to miss”

Your local Conservative Councillors are continuing to support parents, pupils and staff at St George’s High School as they continue their fight against the appalling Labour Council decision to close the school.

St George’s pupils have arranged a second protest march for this coming Saturday, 28th March. The march is being held in Manchester - due to Labour’s decision to charge the pupils for the previous march - and starts from All Saints Gardens on Oxford Road around 11.30am. All local residents are welcome to attend the march and show their support for the school.

Councillor Iain Lindley, Walkden South Ward Councillor and local Prospective Conservative MP said:

“St George’s is still an excellent school at the heart of the local community, and there are still no reasonable grounds for closure. The decision to close the school is indefensible and I will continue to fight until the decision is reversed.”

This consultation will be considered by the Labour Council Cabinet when they make their decision. They’ll ignore it entirely of course, but the submissions will also be considered by the independent adjudicator on appeal - and that will make a difference.

Responses to the statutory consultation must be in writing, you can send them to: Kathryn Mildenstein, Children’s Services Directorate, Minerva House, Pendlebury Road, Swinton, M27 4EQ.

Councillor Iain Lindley, Prospective Conservative MP for Worsley & Eccles South, said:

“St George’s is an excellent school at the heart of the community. There is no reasonable case for closure but Labour are determined to press ahead. It’s really important that local residents register their objections before the deadline.”

Walkden South Conservative Councillors Iain Lindley and Nicky Turner attended the Planning Panel and spoke in support of the residents, who had complained about the loss of amenity for overlooked properties on St George’s Crescent and the likely traffic problems a large new development would cause on Stanley Road and the surrounding streets.

Unfortunately the Labour Councillors on the Planning Panel did not want to listen to the concerns of local people and pushed ahead with the application.

Reacting to the decision, Cllr Iain Lindley said:

It is a real shame that once again Labour Councillors have ignored the concerns of local residents. This development will have a huge negative impact on the local area, causing severe traffic problems on Stanley Road and a significant loss of light to properties on St George’s Crescent. I’m appalled that this application was waved through with no thought for local people at all”

Walkden South Councillor Iain Lindley has been selected as the Prospective Conservative MP for the new Worsley & Eccles South constituency. Iain, who has represented Walkden South ward on Salford City Council since 2004, was adopted by a Special General Meeting of Party members on Thursday night and will now be the Conservative candidate for the constituency at the next General Election.

Speaking to members after his adoption, Iain said:

“It is a huge honour and privilege to have been selected as the Prospective Conservative MP for the new Worsley & Eccles South constituency. I grew up here, attended Walkden High School and I am proud to call it my home.

The communities which make up the new constituency of Worsley & Eccles South have been let down and taken for granted by the Labour Party both locally and nationally - the resounding defeat last month of Labour’s Congestion Charge is just the latest example of just how out-of-touch Labour have become from local needs and concerns.

Local residents from Little Hulton to Cadishead now have a real chance for real change with the Conservatives, and I am looking forward to the challenge ahead.”

Councillor Robin Garrido, Chairman of the City of Salford Conservatives, said:

“I am delighted that Iain has been selected to fight what is now the most marginal seat within the area and I am confident that with the reputation that Iain had already achieved for ‘getting things done’ as a Councillor, many local people will be switching their votes to him and this constituency, for the first time in living memory, will be represented by a local Conservative.”

Following boundary changes, the new Worsley & Eccles South constituency includes the wards of; Worsley, Boothstown & Ellenbrook, Walkden North, Walkden South, Little Hulton, Barton, Winton, Irlam and Cadishead. At the last set of local elections, Conservative candidates held a lead of 12% over the Labour Party across the new constituency.
