Local residents in Walkden and across the City of Salford are set to pay around £1200 a year if Labour plans for a Congestion Charge around Manchester are given the go-ahead.People will be asked to vote on whether they want the new charge in a postal vote. Walkden suffers badly under the proposals - residents will have to pay the charge but plans show that the local area will miss out on any significant transport improvements. Analysis by local Conservative Councillor Iain Lindley showed that Walkden would actually be served by fewer buses if the new arrangements are approved.
At around £1200 a year, the new charge will be a further blow to local residents already struggling with higher fuel, food and road tax.
You will shortly be receiving your ballot paper for the referendum by post, or you may have it already. The final deadline is December 11th - post your vote early!
Walkden Conservative Councillors have been out and about talking to local residents about Labour’s proposed congestion charge tax.
Walkden South Councillors Iain Lindley and Les Turner were joined by Conservative activists outside the Ellesmere Shopping Centre on Saturday to listen to local concerns about the proposed congestion charge tax and the lack of investment in the Walkden area contained within the TIF bid.
Hundreds of local residents have now signed the Conservative petition opposing the Congestion Charge tax. Residents will have the opportunity to register their objection to Labour’s Congestion Charge tax in a poll at the end of the month. Ballot papers will be posted out at the end of November and need to be returned by December 11th for the votes to be counted.
Conservative Councillors in Walkden are campaigning for a “no” vote - residents should vote no and reject the Congestion Charge tax!
Conservative Councillors for Walkden South have demanded action after the former Walkden Library site on Memorial Road was left as a derelict mess.
The former library building has now been boarded up with wooden hoardings and is starting to attract anti-social behaviour. Local Councillors Nicky Turner (pictured), Les Turner and Iain Lindley visited the site this week and are extremely concerned. Cllr Lindley said:
“The building looks horrendous. It is already a prime site for anti-social behaviour - there have been numerous sightings in the last week or two of youths on the roof or trying to break in - and if action is not taken soon we run the risk of (at best) more anti-social behaviour and (at worst) the building being torched.”
Your local Conservative Councillors believe that the building should be brought back into community use - the Youth Service have long been interested in making use of the building.
