Community Committee Tonight!

The Walkden & Little Hulton Community Committee will meet tonight (Monday 28th July 2008) at Little Hulton SureStart Centre, Longshaw Drive. The meeting starts at 6pm. All local residents are welcome to attend.

C-Charge Money - No Investment In Walkden

Your local Conservative Councillors will continue to oppose the Labour proposals for the introduction of a congestion charge.

Local residents will be forced to pay up to £10 per day in order to drive to work, visit family or go shopping. However, the newly-published plans for public transport changes show that local residents in Walkden will receive little benefit from the huge loan that your local Councils will have to take out to fund investment.

Your Conservative Councillors want to hear your views on the proposals and how they will affect local residents - please get in touch!

Walkden Library Site To Become Flats?

Your local Conservatives Councillors are appalled at Labour Council plans to sell off the current library site to developers when the new library opens in September - without any consultation with residents.

Your Councillors are delighted with the facilities available in the new “Gateway Centre” but would prefer that the current site should be retained for community use, not sold off to property companies to build more unwanted empty apartments.

Cllr Iain Lindley said:

“I am disgusted that the plans to sell off the site have been made without any consultation with local residents in the area. The last thing that Walkden town centre needs is more empty apartments. As with the sale of the Market Hall and Pembroke Halls, the Labour Council will be all too happy to sell off our community facilities and then spend the money elsewhere in the City.”

Happy Birthday Walkden Station!

120 years ago today, the first passenger train arrived at Walkden station. The Friends of Walkden Station kindly organised a small stall and celebration this morning which was well appreciated by commuters who snapped up the available goody bags in no time at all.

Northern Rail staff and the British Transport Police were also in attendance. Well done to Northern, BTP and especially the FOWS Committee for organising an excellent event!
